Paul is based in Southend on Sea, Essex where he's enjoys a successful career as an artist and tutor with 15 years teaching experience. After completing his foundation studies in Art and Design at Southend College of Art; a degree in Fine Art - Painting followed at Camberwell School of Art, completed in 1986. Since then Paul has practiced as an Artist, exhibiting in a range of exhibitions in London and the south east.
In 2011 Paul's painting "Sunday Morning" won best work in exhibition at the Essex Open Exhibition held at the Beecroft Gallery, Westcliff on sea.
In 2012 Paul was chosen to paint live with the BBC during their coverage of the Queens Diamond Jubilee River Pageant, where he painted as the Pageant unfolded in the rain from the spectacular vantage point of Millennium Bridge. That year he was also short listed in the Artist and Illustrator magazines Artist of the year competition.
In Septrember 2013 Paul's work was featured on the cover and in an article in the Society of all Artists "Paint" Magazine. In 2014 Paul started writing for the Liesure Painter Magazine.
The main body of Paul's work is executed in oil. The sheer joy of painting and drawing the beauty of the world around him, from direct observation wherever possible provides the drive behind his work. Sketching has also been an important part of Paul's working process and has allowed him the freedom to make spontaneous studies from many different locations. Paul works from a wide range of subjects and believes in following his instincts when it comes to choosing themes. He particularly enjoys subjects with an interaction of contrasting elements, such as the man made and the natural world, the play of light, colour, rhythm and movement also important factors influencing his choices.
Commissions: As well as producing a body of work of his own choosing Paul has also worked to commission on a number of occasions and has produced art works for a number of organisations including SEPT NHS Trusts newly build Brentwood Resource Centre at Highwood Hospital, South Essex Homes and London Gateway.
Teaching: Paul's runs weekly art classes for Adults in Leigh on Sea, Westcliff and Rayleigh and runs art courses and painting holidays for Arte Umbria, Watershed Studios, Old School Studios and Old Bank Studio, SEPT NHS trust and Southend Adult Community College. He also demonstrates painting techniques and runs workshops for many art groups in Essex and the South East.
Exhibitions: Paul exhibits his work at the Leigh art trail or the Rochford Art trail each year and also takes part in local exhibitions and occasional exhibitions in London.
